Hello,
my power bi report is just over 1.2 GB in size
power bi says it can not be published because of the size.
What are the alternatives to publish?
The report is set to import for data extraction which is what I prefer to keep as.
thank you
[Hi @arkiboys,
Have you tried using DataMentor/EDNA AI tools built within the EDNA Platform?
DataMentor is a great tool to help you with possible solutions to your issues.
Using DataMentor this what comes up:
When dealing with Power BI reports that exceed the size limit for publishing, here are some alternatives to consider:
1. Data Reduction Techniques
- Filter Data: Limit the data being imported by applying filters to the data source to only include the most relevant data.
- Aggregate Data: Pre-aggregate data to summarise it and reduce the volume of imported data. For example, if daily data is being imported, consider importing weekly or monthly aggregates.
2. Optimize Data Model
- Remove Unused Columns and Tables: Review your data model and eliminate any columns or tables that are unnecessary for your analysis.
- Data Type Optimization: Ensure that data types are set correctly and are optimized (e.g., using Integer instead of Decimal when possible).
3. Use DirectQuery Mode
- Switch to DirectQuery: If you can accept querying data in real-time rather than importing it, consider switching to DirectQuery. This mode allows you to keep the data in the source system, thus reducing the size of the report.
4. Incremental Data Loads
- Use Incremental Refresh: If applicable, consider using incremental data load capabilities which allow for only a portion of the data to be loaded at a time rather than the entire dataset.
5. Publish to Power BI Premium
- Power BI Premium or Premium Per User: If you need to keep the report size as is, consider upgrading to Power BI Premium, which accommodates larger dataset sizes up to 400GB.
6. Split the Report
- Break Up the Report: If feasible, split the report into smaller, more manageable reports that can be published separately and linked.
7. Use a Different Sharing Method
- Share as a PBIX File: You can share the Power BI Desktop (.pbix) file directly with users who can open it and view in their Power BI Desktop, although this lacks the collaborative features of the service.
- Publish to the Web: Use the Publish to Web feature to host the report externally, but be aware of data sensitivity issues.
Evaluate these options based on your specific needs and constraints to find the best solution for your situation.
If you need to expand on any of the solutions that is given, just copy the solution and ask please explain more using the DataMentor.
I hope this helps.
Keith
Hi @arkiboys - Power BI Pro has a limitation of 1 GB PBIX file size for publishing to Power BI Service. Any file above the limit can’t be published.
Data Mentor tips shared by @Keith should be good enough to reduce the data size. Other option will be to move to Direct Query.
If still facing issue after applying them then let us know.
Thanks

Hi, how about moving the workspace in fabric capacity?
thanks
Hi @arkiboys - Based on my knowledge on Fabric capacity, it depends on what capacity are you buying.
For any capacity below F64 i.e. equivalent to P1 capacity, either Pro or Premium Per User (PPU) license is needed and limitations will still remain. So, can either go for PPU or Premium or Fabric capacity starting F64.
