Get data from one dataset and applying other data sources

Hi,

I believe the live connection to a dataset feature while allowing the model to be updated with adtl sources included was made available in the December 2020 release of Power BI Desktop.

I have a published dataset sourced from a spreadsheet file in One Drive.

When I use the Preview Features of “DirectQuery for PBI datasets and AS” in PBI Desktop and then connect to that published Power BI dataset source, I have a live connection to my dataset, but I have no option to add or connect to other sources. All ‘get data’ options are grayed out.

Am I misunderstanding which “type” of datasets allow for them to be used in Power BI Desktop as one of multiple sources, or am I missing a step/action I need to take to allow this to happen?

FYI, I am using the July 2021 version of Power BI Desktop, and my enterprise has Pro licensing.

Thank you,
Kevin

Hi @kkieger. IMO, your understanding of composite datasets is correct. I’ve run into this situation as well with one of my clients, and it is their “old” (ancient, actually) database infrastructure that is preventing this from happening. Sounds like your Power BI setup is good, but perhaps the database infrastructure is too old and in need of a newer version to enable this. Not what your wanted to hear, I’m sure, but …

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the reply. The live connection to a power bi dataset source works as expected with a dataset sourced from files in a SharePoint folder, but does not allow adtl sources when connecting to a dataset sourced from a OneDrive file.

I’m hoping there’s some explanation for the different behavior.

Bumping this post for more visibility.

HI @kkieger

As @Greg stated it’s really annoying sometime you can’t get it going with composite model. Could you try doing other way, first connect with the 2nd source and then try add the published model to connect. As mentioned earlier, try checking if you can updated your published model.

Can suggest trail and error method only, as this has worked for me when I had similar challenge.

Thanks
Mukesh

Hi @kkieger , did the response provided by @MK3010 help you solve your query?
