Environmental reporting for oil tanks

Hello! I have a question that requires some ideas to bounce back to me. At my company we have implemented an IoT device to monitor when a hatch is opened or closed on an oil storage tank. This is important for ESG purposes along with making sure the producēr is not venting hydrocarbon vapors. The device registers only a date/timestamp and a input/output of open/close for the data. Along with the battery life and location of the device. The CEO wants me to put a PBI dashboard together for the customer. There is not much to use to make a great dashboard. So what are your thoughts on how to design a dashboard that’s interesting instead of a boring “the lid is open, the lid is shut”??? Thanks in advance.

@Paul.Gerber ,

I’m looping in Enterprise DNA Expert @haroonali1000. I know that his firm does a lot of Power BI work in the IoT world, and they build gorgeous reports, so he may have some excellent suggestions for you.

@BrianJ @haroonali1000 Thanks.

My thought process is to calculate the in-breathing and out-breathing based on volume of vapor and volume of tanks using API 2000. I’ve done this before. Then the vapor is found in MSCFD that is flashing off the oil inside. That volume will escape through the 8” opening in so much time. Then I want to find the price/cf of vapor to show amount of money saved or wasted (depends on how you look at it) to the customer.

Bumping this post for more visibility.

@Paul.Gerber ,

I came across this post on LinkedIn today from @PascalKiefer.

I think it may be a very interesting way to display the information regarding your oil tank status.

Take a look and see what you think. Attached is the PBIX file for how he created that report.

I hope this is helpful.

If you want an interesting instead of a boring report, working with pictures showing an open or closed lid might be a good option. This will also make sure everybody can easily understand the report.
Do you have a picture of such storage tank and lid?

These are pictures of a closed lid, right? What does it look like when it’s open?

This is not mine but it’ll give you an idea

Hi @Paul.Gerber! We noticed that your inquiry was left unsolved for quite some time now.

Looks like your inquiry was out of the experts and users’ bounds.

We strive to answer ALL inquiries in the forum. However, if you are sure that you provided all pertinent context to your concerns and read how to use the forum more effectively and still find your question unanswered, you can check out tutorials to learn this yourself as your membership also comes with relevant resources that may help you with your Power BI education.

While our users and experts do as much as reasonable to help you with your inquiries, not all concerns can be attended to especially if there are some learnings to be done. Thank you!

Hi @Paul.Gerber
I only just saw this now, sorry for that.
I’ll forward this to one of our SVG experts :slight_smile: I’ll keep you posted once I have a design to look at

This GIF shows what we came up with from the pictures you’ve provided and some we found online. Unfortunately, we didn’t really have any good images so it was difficult to design this properly. But I guess it still shows another possible use case of the HTML & CSS Viewer visual.

I’ve also attached the PBIX.
Your feedback would be much appreciated.

How can I obtain a License?

Good to hear you like the sample! But please note that there’s much more you can do with the visual! We would have to know more about your requirements to design exactly what you need. You can use this form if you want us to design a specific element for you: https://kteam.ch/svg-order/

Because the visual is still quite new and we are collecting feedback to make it better, you can get a license by just emailing us. You’ll find more information about this at the bottom of this page: https://kteam.ch/html-css-viewer/
