Creating Opening and Closing balances from financial data

Anonymised data for TB query.xlsx (1.4 MB)

Dear All

I have connected PowerBi to Sage accounting system, having some issues with using opening balances DAX function, not sure if it is me or not understanding what it is trying to do and whether I need another function (eg sum all transactions for predetermined periods to show various opening balances – eg creating a calculated table with say Nominal Ledger accounts in first column and opening balances for say FY20/ FY 21/ FY22 etc in additional columns, being sum of all transactions prior to first date in the additional columns.)

I am trying to be able to produce a Trial Balance from a continuous set of transactional data that crosses several years, the Balance Sheet accounts should have an opening balance being the net of ALL previous transactions, the P&L the same (as an automatic journal ordinarily will net off those accounts against retained reserves).

Note in my anonymised example I have replaced real data with random data which is why the transactions in total do not net to zero and you may have negative entries where you would expect positive ones etc and vice versa.

thanks

Mike
