Access to a data set for building reports

I have several users that are trying to use a published dataset. Thety are all part of an AD group and so the access should be the same for all.

Is there a way in the Power BI Service / desktop to connect to the data set as that person?

I can open the data set as me and see what they should see but I cant tell why they cant open the data set.

When they go to ‘get data’ - Power BI data sets - the data set is visible. But they get an error message

The Error message I can see is “we cannot connect you to your model in the Power bi service. The dataset may have been deleted, renamed, moved or you are not authorized to access it”

PBI desktop was recently installed so June 2021
Just one person out of a group is having the issue
Thanks

this may be a sharing permissions issue - in order for users other than yourself to connect to the dataset, several things must be in place.

  1. the dataset cannot be in your “My Workspace” (that workspace is not ideal for sharing with others - consider it a test ground for yourself)
  2. the users need to have Pro or Premium-Per-User (PPU) licenses (see link 1)
  3. the users need to have some build conditions to the dataset (see link 2)

The data set is in a premium workspace
The user is part of a group that has build permissions,
The other people in the group are ok with their access
The user has a pro license

Having said that is there a way they can check their license? I had assumed it was Pro as that is the default for the client.

it should be visible when they log into PowerBi.com - in their profile area (click on the profile picture to see it - mine is the purple rose in the corner)

Many thanks

My best guess on the scenario and what has happened is as follows.

There are two AD groups (we will call them AD_View and AD_Build) and individuals who should have access.

On first glance it appears that both groups can view and build with the exception of two people in group AD_Build.

When I open the data set in desktop to check Row level security I view as general access and add the the user details. All is good.

When I look at “manage permissions” on the data set in PowerBI.com I can see both AD groups have the right permission.

When I look at Security on the dataset I can see Admins and General access
Under General access only one of the two AD groups is present. After adding the individual and testing this resolves the issue.

I have since added the AD_BUILD to general access on the general access and crossed fingers all is good.

It appears only a few people were given Build but not view - which seems weird

Many thanks
